The dominant language for transacting knowledge in India has been Sanskrit for a long time. Therefore for the purpose of the book, the main source of knowledge to discuss various aspects of IKS is drawn from the Sanskrit literature.
As the Sanatan Dharma literature has already been seen by us, the Jain and some of the Buddhist literature are presented using Sanskrit as the medium of language.Choosing a Sanskrit-based knowledge repository does not imply that other regional languages in the country did not have similar knowledge available.

However, as noted earlier, the complexity and unwieldiness of the process become evident when all these are presented in a single book. The other aspect for inclusion is that the knowledge shall be quoted, cross referenced, and acknowledged in the domain by the indigenous people.Internal consistency and validation of the knowledge are provided by this, as established by the indigenous society. The other issue that merits attention is, "how recent a history must be included in the definition?"The culture of new knowledge creation was an unhindered process in the country until the early 19th century.

However, beginning the 16th century CE, a wave of invasion in the country has been introduced, bringing newer dimensions and priorities in society. Therefore, greater focus is placed on preserving the existing knowledge repository.Further, beginning the 16th century, the influence of the ascend of the Western knowledge systems and scientific discoveries was had on the native knowledge practices also. Therefore, the purpose of this book is mainly served by the knowledge sources dated up to the 16th century CE.
